He may be best known as the Hollywood heartthrob who has kept audiences entertained with his phenomenal performances in hit movies such as Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and American Sniper (all of which he has been nominated for an Oscar) as well as the insanely popular Hangover series.
Most recently, however, Bradley Cooper has been trying his hand on the stage as the Elephant Man, receiving stellar reviews for his Broadway run which ends on February 21st.
British fans of the actor can now begin to get excited as it has just been announced that Cooper will then be bringing his critically acclaimed performance over to London for a limited season at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from May 19th until August 8th.
Portraying the physically deformed John Merrick, the Limitless star will bring the true story, which also inspired the 1980 film, to life in the West End where he will be joined by co-stars Patricia Clarkson and Alessandro Nivola.
Speaking of the news, Cooper said: “Never did we think we would have the privilege to perform this show on Broadway, let alone in London. I’m honoured that Alessandro, Patricia, the entire company and I have the opportunity to continue to tell his story.”
The Elephant Man is directed by six-time Tony nominee Scott Ellis and it is truly Cooper’s performance that has had the theatreworld talking. Rather than using prosthetics for the role, he has chosen to instead contour his body to portray Merrick’s deformities.
For those who don’t know the story of The Elephant Man, it focuses on Merrick, who in the 19th century was the star of a travelling freakshow. He is then taken under the wing of the renowned Dr Teves who becomes amazed by Merrick’s faith, intelligence and understanding.
Dr Teves then introduces Merrick to a beautiful actress, Mrs Kendal, and the three embark on a unique friendship that sees both Teves and Kendal try to protect Merrick from the outside world.
Tickets for The Elephant Man are available now and are likely to sell out, so make sure you purchase yours quickly.
