The Meltdown Fesitval is one of the biggest highlights in the musical calendar so grab your tickets and book your hotels in London for this year's summer showcase.
Since its beginning 20 years ago, the Meltdown Festival has given many internationally acclaimed artists the chance to take over its 21-acre site. Past highlights over the years include Jeff Buckley's final UK show, the reunion of glam punk band the New York Dolls, and a first solo performance for 15 years from Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser.
Hosted at London's landmark Southbank Centre, the Meltdown Fesitval is unique as it is run by a different artist each year. Artists to have already curated the event over the years include David Bowie, Lee Scratch Perry, Morrissey, Patti Smith, Jarvis Cocker, and Massive Attack. This June it is the turn of musician, artist, and peace activist Yoko Ono, and tickets will be extremely sought after.
Ono celebrates her 80th birthday this year, and this year's event will be a chance for her to promote the most important aspects of her glittering career, with a dedication to environmentalism, feminism and peace.
The list of artists to collaborate with Ono over the years include Lady Gaga, David Byrne, Patti Smith, Eric Clapton, The Flaming Lips, and Andy Warhol.
And the lineup for this year's festival will see a whole host of big names hand picked by Ono herself, with revelers guaranteed a diverse selection of artists and acts that range from the classical, to the avant-garde and plain bizarre. There is therefore sure to be something that will suit the tastes of everyone.
The festival will take place over the course of 12 days, and is by no means restricted to music, with the event also providing a stage for film screenings, photography exhibitions and more.
The Meltdown Festival 2013 takes place at the Southbank Centre from Friday 14th – Sunday 23rd June 2013. Ticket information TBC.
